All about addiction
What is an addiction?
Addiction is more than recreational or experimental drug use and more than simply a habit or a pattern of behaviour. Addiction is when you are doing something over and over again that you know is not good for you or that you know will have negative consequences, and you are unable to stop yourself from doing it.
Your addiction may take the form of a drug such as alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine or marijuana; it may be an addiction to an activity such as eating, working, shopping, gambling, sex, internet porn, or screens & technology. You might even become addicted to a process such as harming yourself or falling in love.
Where addiction can get complicated is in knowing yourself when you have crossed the line from a mere habit or recreational use to the start of an addiction. One of the symptoms of addiction is that the brain suddenly becomes very adept and clever at denying and deluding itself that it is in the grip of addiction. Brain science has now proved that the immense power of the brain is literally hijacked by the addiction and becomes hyper focussed on maintaining the addiction.
It can be helpful to read other people’s addiction stories and what caused addiction for them and how they have overcome it:
Recovery from addiction
It may be useful to speak with a therapist who is an expert in this area to assist in working out if you have an addiction. Research has shown that the earlier you intervene in the cycle of addiction the better chance you have of beating it.
It is important that you find a therapist who is both an expert in the field of addiction as well as being a good fit for you. Research has shown that the alliance between you and your therapist is the most important element for a successful outcome.
