Anger management for children
Techniques to help children manage anger better
Similar to adults, anger management for children is about helping them deal with their anger by understanding what causes the anger, guiding them through the process when they feel angry and helping them channel their anger in more constructive ways.
Uncontrolled anger can cause significant problems for a child, particularly the relationships around him or her at school or childcare. If left unattended, in some cases, uncontrolled anger can result in a child being asked to be removed from the school or childcare centre.
1. Identify triggers
Similar to adults the steps in managing their anger start with identification of triggers. Take note of the situations or things that seem to trigger your child’s anger and then try to minimise your child’s exposure to these things (e.g. remove a toy that is frustrating them)
2. Help them see the signs

3. Help your child calm down and refocus
Tell your child to take a deep breath and count backwards from 10 to 1. Or help your child understand there are alternatives, such as asking for help if they feel frustrated. Let your child work off their anger through some physical exercise.
4. Reward your child when they control their anger
Such as with attention or doing something they enjoy.
5. Remember to tell your child that anger is natural
Everyone gets angry sometimes, but it also needs to be managed and expressed in a healthy way.
