What is an anxiety disorder?
When does anxiety become a disorder?
An anxiety disorder is more than just feeling nervous in stressful situations it is actually an illness where you feel persistent and severe fear or worry in situations where other people wouldn’t feel threatened. High levels of anxiety can make it hard for you to cope with day to day life and may stop you doing the things you really enjoy.
Anxiety is the most common mental disorder in Australia; it affects 1 in 4 people at some time in their lives. Men (1 in 8 in any one year) are more likely to get anxiety than women (1 in 12 in any one year).
Some people try to manage their anxiety by using alcohol or drugs to numb the anxious feelings. Many people with anxiety start to avoid situations where they think they will feel anxious this can include social situations, going out in public or being in small spaces like elevators or planes. If you are avoiding common day to day situations then this often has a significant impact on your life, your ability to work or go to school and your relationships. Anxiety when it’s left untreated can impact deeply on people’s lives however there is readily available help with anxiety, so you don’t need to go it alone.
