What is bipolar?
Bipolar has also been referred to as manic-depressive disorder and is characterized by extreme mood swings. It is normal to experience ups and downs in life, and to have periods when you are a bit moody, however, those who experience bipolar experience dramatic mood swings.
Bipolar is a mood disorder caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain which creates extreme fluctuations in mood ranging from mania to depression. What someone may say or do during an extreme mood can play havoc with their personal, social and work life. However, when managed with the help of mental health professionals those effected by bipolar can live functional happy lives.
Not everyone’s experience is the same there are different types of bipolar. For example, some people may have extreme mood swings every day, and some may stay in one mood for a period of time. Some people may go through long periods when they have no symptoms and some may constantly struggle with extreme moods. Click here to find out more about the different types of bipolar.
People who develop bipolar generally begin to experience depressive or manic episodes in their teens or early adulthood. The symptoms can be subtle and are consequently misdiagnosed or missed all together. Early diagnosis of bipolar is very important. If it is diagnosed early and managed it will have less impact on the person’s life. A qualified mental health professional needs to make diagnosis of this kind.
