Making a career change / How can career coaching help? / Finding the best career coach for you
Gone are the days when people work in the same job for life; most people will now have between three to seven different careers in their lifetime. Changing jobs is even more common. Statistics show that people between ages 18 and 38 change jobs 10 times! Some people are already spending more than an hour a day looking for their next job. There is a lot of career change going on.
It can be helpful to read the experiences of others who have used a life coach:
Why do people change jobs or careers?
While every person’s situation is different, these are some common reasons people want to change their job or career:
They didn’t select the right job or career in the first place
They don’t get along with their boss or people they work with
There is restructuring in their current organisation
They want a better opportunity or a higher salary
They want more work-life balance. Click here for more information on work-life balance.
While restructuring is the most common reason in 54% of career or job changes, it can also often be a catalyst for other issues such as unhappiness with current work, salary or career choice. Additionally, for women family and work-life balance is often a more important reason than for men.
How can career coaching help?
If you are interested in a career change for any reason, career coaching can help you with this process.
I wanted to be a….but now I’m a….. When we were a child we dreamt of what we wanted to be when we grew up. For some, the first step towards career change is finding out what they really want to do….and what they are good at. This is where career coaching can really help, by guiding you through a process of identifying what you value, what your strengths are and what you are passionate about. This will help you identify the career and job that is right for you.
I don’t get along with my boss and/or people I work with. Workplaces are all about complex relationships. Learning how to navigate these relationships successfully is essential for a successful career. Career coaching can help you develop strategies to more effectively manage up, across and down.
I didn’t want a career change, but it came to me anyway. Organisations are in a constant state of change and restructures are common. Often someone’s role may change, or they may be made redundant. For some people this provides an opportunity to think about what they would really like to do. For others this can be deeply distressing. Depending on how this change impacts you, career coaching may be able to help. If you are ready to identify your next job or career, then a career coach can help you with this process. If you are feeling highly distressed, weepy, and/or anxious , then you may need to speak to a therapist first. Select Counsellors can help you find a therapist who is the best fit for you
Show me the career opportunities! Often a catalyst for looking for a new job or career is the desire for more career opportunities, including a higher salary. A career coach can help you focus your strategy to achieve this goal. The coach will facilitate the explorations of your needs, motivations, desires, skills and thought processes to assist you to make real and lasting change. Part of this process means that the coach will challenge you and your thinking, which at the time may be uncomfortable for you. This is all part of the process of change.
I want more balance. A common reason for seeking a career change is the desire to find more work-life balance, often with the arrival of children. This is also where a career coach can be very valuable, not only with helping you discovering options for the new job or career, but also with developing techniques to help you achieve more balance, click here for more information on work-life balance.
