What is depression
Depression explained / Understanding depression
Depression is more than just occasionally feeling sad or low it is actually an illness that makes you feel down most of the time. Depression can make it hard for you to cope with day to day life and may stop you doing the things you really enjoy. Depression significantly impacts your physical, emotional and mental well being and can be detrimental to your relationships both personally and professionally. Depression is not something that you can just ‘snap out of’.
Depression is very common and it affects 1 in 5 people at some time in their lives. Women (1 in 5) are more likely to get depression than men (1 in 8), however men often find it more difficult to talk about how they are feeling and are less likely to seek out help. Depression affects men and women of any age as well as children and adolescents. Without treatment depression can last months and even years.
Depression affects different people in different ways. Some people may experience a one off episode of depression that is a result of a major life event like having a baby, getting divorced or losing a loved one. Other people may experience long term depression and find that depression comes and goes all through their life. Tell me more
