Positive parenting tips
Some general positive parenting tips to keep in mind:
Use affection when dealing with your kids. Teens who received a hug from a parent in the previous week were more likely to perform better at school.
Take the time out to listen to your childrenwhen they want to talk to you about something or share something with you. Use eye contact and gentle touch.
Healthy body and mind is important for kids. This means feeding them healthy food and restricting sugar and junk food in their diet. Restricting their time in front of TV and video games and increasing their exercise time makes a big difference to their mood, ability to learn and behaviour.
Relish your child’s uniqueness. Try to spend individual time with them each day and take interest in the things that they enjoy. Don’t compare them to anyone else or ask them why they can’t be more like someone else.
Take care of yourself. If you’re strung out, depressed or anxious then it’s very hard to parent well. Take some time out for yourself regularly and get support from family and friends if you need to.
Combat boredom by providing lots of stimulation for your children through games (not video games), activities, craft and sport.
Set up consequences for behaviour. Be clear with your kids about what good behaviour looks like. Keep calm when they’re misbehaving and let them know if the behaviour continues what the consequence will be and follow through.
Be realistic in your expectations. Children are going to misbehave sometimes and it doesn’t mean you are a failure as a parent. Be prepared for the ups and downs of being a parent.
